What You Should Know About the Product

In modern aesthetic medicine, in addition to traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, products based on poly-lactic acid are widely used. This synthetic polymer is fully compatible with body tissues, does not cause allergic reactions, and is safe for health. Its main advantage is a longer-lasting effect: while hyaluronic fillers typically last 6–12 months, Sculptra can maintain results for up to two years.

The filler Sculptra was developed by the pharmaceutical company Q-Med AB (France) in the late 1990s. Initially marketed under the name NewFill, it received FDA approval in the USA in 2004. It was authorized for restoring facial volume in cases of lipoatrophy, including in HIV patients. Today, the product is manufactured in Sweden and the USA and is widely used in facial contouring procedures.

Form and Procedure

Sculptra comes as a granulated powder in glass vials. Several hours before treatment, it is reconstituted with sterile water and shaken before injection. The filler is administered into the deep dermis. To ensure even distribution, the procedure is finished with a 5-minute massage. A topical anesthetic cream is recommended to reduce discomfort.

How Sculptra Works

The filler activates natural rejuvenation processes. Poly-lactic acid stimulates fibroblasts, which then produce new collagen and elastin fibers, while also enhancing the synthesis of natural hyaluronic acid. This gradually makes the skin denser, firmer, and smoother.

Sculptra is often called “liquid threads” because it creates a collagen framework that provides a lifting effect. Even after the active ingredient fully biodegrades into water and carbon dioxide, the collagen continues to support facial and body contours for a long time.

Results

Initial improvements appear within 4–6 weeks, become more pronounced by around 6 months, and last on average 14–25 months, sometimes even longer.

Areas of Use

Sculptra is suitable for correcting:

  • facial wrinkles and volume loss (cheeks, chin, cheekbones);

  • gravitational ptosis, brow and eyelid descent;

  • age-related changes in the neck;

  • scars and post-acne marks;

  • dryness and wrinkles on the hands;

  • sagging skin and folds on the abdomen and thighs.
